Guide to Choosing a Hot Water Heat Pump

Energy Efficient
Look for models with high energy efficiency ratings. Heat pumps with a high Coefficient of Performance (COP) deliver more heat per unit of electricity consumed. For example, a unit with COP of 4 will return you 4 units of hot water for every 1 unit of power consumed.

Refrigerant Type
Different heat pump models use different refrigerants. Some refrigerants are more efficient and better for the environment than others. Here are the most common refrigerants with their COP and Global Warming Potential (GWP) scores. The higher the COP and the lower the GWP the better. We recommend hot water heat pumps with R290, CO2 or R32 refrigerants.

Integrated or Split System
Around 95% of the installs we do are integrated external systems. The whole unit sits outside the house freeing up valuable space inside. If an integrated system is not possible (sometimes the cylinder needs to be located inside so that it is central to all water outlets, or there simply isn’t space outside), then a split system is worth looking at. A split system will have a compressor unit outside and a hot water cylinder either inside or outside. The benefit of a split system is that their recovery time tends to be quicker. The downside is that they can be more expensive to purchase and install.

Tank Capacity
Choose the right tank size based on household demand.
-
Small households (1-2 people): 180 - 250L
-
Medium households (3-4 people): 250 - 300L
-
Large households (5+ people): 300L+

Warranty Support
Check the warranty offered by the manufacturer, A good quality heat pump should come with a decent warranty period, but just as importantly the supplier should be a credible and established company. Ensure the supplier or manufacturer has spare parts readily available and a service agent in your area.

Installation Requirements
Professional installation is crucial for optimal performance and warranty validation. Look for experienced, qualified and insured trades people, like Premier Heating.
